Maybe work that revealed their basic biology and ecological requirements could be used to save it in the future. Yet, Slaght was interested in research with consequence, “something with broad conservation impact.” The owls, though undisturbed right now, would not remain so. None of this would seem to be promising for a Ph.D. Living in Russia’s Far East, Siberian Tiger habitat, the birds are rare and seldom-seen. They are best located in winter, when they are drawn to open stretches of river, from which they nab small fish, the bulk of their diet. Slaghtīlakiston’s fish owls are huge, the “size of a fire hydrant” according to researcher Jon Slaght. ![]() Owls of the Eastern Ice: A Quest to Find and Save the World’s Largest Owl by Jonathan C. ![]() ![]() This novel is much more than high-concept fiction. Leah and her colleagues find that, inside the submersible, ‘day’ and ‘night’ are slippery notions and, after initial frenzied attempts fail to revive the craft or to communicate with the world, a blanketing silence descends and, surprisingly, resignation and lethargy rather than panic hold sway. In the first few pages, we are told by Miri not only that Leah has returned from this life-threatening catastrophe, but that she has returned “changed”. On her latest trip, communication and power suddenly die, causing the sub to drop to the deepest ocean floor. ![]() ![]() ![]() Miri is the principal narrator whose wife, Leah, a marine biologist, explores sea life via short research trips in a three-person submersible. This novel is both an expertly crafted work of fiction and a transformation fable, a modernist one without a moral. Our Wives Under the Sea, the debut novel by Julia Armfield, may be characterized as an incisive exploration of human relationships and loss, as a narrative both funny and darkly claustrophobic, as a truncated same-sex romance, an engaging mystery, and a startling exercise in gothic horror. Overarching these genres is an articulation of the concept of sinking, both in the sea and in life. ![]() ![]() In the development of the Septimus character, Woolf drew on him, her own personal experience: the realism of this character, his almost tangible madness, is not the result of a fine narrative mimicry but a profound process of reminiscence and analysis of a disease that cyclically overwhelmed the life of the author. ![]() Woolf herself, in the introduction to the novel written in 1928, was explicit in saying that Septimus was to be interpreted as Clarissa’s double. Woolf’s mental health influenced, at least from a structural point of view, the the novel’s ‘bipolar’ structure, which sees, in fact, the intertwining sensations, memories, points of view, perceptions and desperations of two characters, in particular, Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Warren Smith, his double and opposite ideal. Dalloway, published in 1925, is the one that deals with the theme of mental illness in the most direct and effective way. ![]() ![]() Among the whole production of the beloved English writer, the novel Mrs. ![]() ![]() When the wood and coal are gone, twist hay into tight bundles for fuel.ġ1. It is a book I am certain I will read again. The book is deeply moving and it was I am pleased that Alys has allowed us to read the journey that she purposely embarked upon and more importantly the journey she then found herself on. I pour myself, sometimes quite physically, into nature because it is how I make sense of myself and my place in the world." I can identify strongly with these words. I belong to the garden rather than the other way round. The book is beautifully written, one passage that particularly sang to me: I have come to think of Birmingham as my second home and I loved the description of the area around where I work and of Spaghetti Junction, the gateway to Birmingham for me and many others. The book focuses on the natural and industrial landscapes, the plants and history of the canals that are explored. ![]() There is joy and sadness running through the book, with each step of self-realisation acknowledging the cost to others. The book centres around four main characters, Alys, her then husband, her future girlfriend and the West Midlands canal network. ![]() The voyage of discovery refers to more than canals, this is also a deeply personal journey that weaves through it the end of Alys's marriage and her realisation that she was in love with a woman. ![]() ![]() Old wounds were re opened, trust became a distant memory for the time being, and love stood at the forefront. I loved how Lily went from having no one in her corner to many fighting in her corner. But within that dark place a gentleman and his son made an impact on her life as requested by a daughter, a sister, it was her wish which got the ball rolling. Such a profound journey this took us on, with all the lies & truths to be finally be put to rest, Lily's journey started with betrayal of a heart-wrenching story making her an escape-goat which subsequently had her spending time behind bars for a crime which had us all up in arms towards the ones responsible.
